Getting Help

Where to Ask Questions

  1. Your company’s internal Slack/Teams - Start here
  2. r/sre and r/devops - Reddit communities
  3. SRE Slack communities - Real-time help
  4. Stack Overflow - Tag: [sre] or [site-reliability]
  5. Tool-specific forums - Prometheus, Kubernetes, etc.

Tips for Getting Good Answers

  • Be specific: Include error messages, configs, and context
  • Show what you’ve tried: Demonstrate effort before asking
  • Make it reproducible: Minimal example that shows the problem
  • Follow up: Share what worked to help others

Staying Current

SRE practices evolve quickly. Here’s how to stay up to date:

  1. Subscribe to 2-3 newsletters (SRE Weekly is essential)
  2. Follow 5-10 practitioners on Twitter/LinkedIn
  3. Attend 1 conference per year (virtual counts!)
  4. Read incident postmortems from major companies
  5. Experiment with new tools in non-production environments

Final Advice

You don’t need all of these tools and resources to do SRE.

Start with:

  • One monitoring tool (Prometheus + Grafana)
  • One incident management tool (PagerDuty free tier)
  • SRE Weekly newsletter
  • The Google SRE books (free online)

Build from there based on your actual needs, not what’s trendy.

The best tools are the ones you’ll actually use.
